There’s nothing unusual about dimpling across your tights, gum, stomach or legs. In fact, cellulite is incredibly common.
According to non-invasive body contouring doctor Galyna Selezneva, “Between 80–90 per cent of all post-pubescent women have some level of visible cellulite.” Yet, despite how widespread it is, cellulite remains one of the most talked-about and misunderstood skin concerns.
So, what is cellulite exactly? And why does it tend to show up more in certain areas of the body?
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite is linked to the way fat is distributed beneath the skin. “Cellulite is a visual representation of pockets of fat running between hard fibrous bands that are attached to the skin,” shares Selezneva.
In simple terms, the connective tissue (fibrous bands) holds the skin down while fat pushes up between it, creating the uneven, dimpled texture known as cellulite. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, this combination of fat and connective tissue is what creates the appearance of cellulite and it’s completely normal.
But if most of us have cellulite, why is it more visible in some than others?
“The higher the fat percentage of your mass, the thicker your subcutaneous fat layer, so the underlying fibrous tissue cuts into the skin more,” Selezena says.
That means your dress size doesn’t dictate whether you’ll develop cellulite. Genetics and lifestyle play a role too, cellulite can run in families, and a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, or smoking may make dimples more noticeable. “Moreover, as we age, skin loses its elasticity, resulting in the worsening appearance of cellulite too,” adds Selezneva.
Where on the body can cellulite dimples be found
Certain areas of the body are more prone to cellulite than others. The thighs and bum are the most common locations, but cellulite on the legs and stomach is also very normal.
These areas tend to store fat differently and are influenced by circulation, connective tissue structure, and skin firmness, all of which affect the appearance of cellulite.

Can you get rid of cellulite?
If you’re wondering if cellulite removal is even possible, you’re not alone. But the reality is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.
While there’s no magic solution to make cellulite disappear completely, many people choose to focus on improving how cellulite looks, rather than trying to eliminate it altogether.
“You can’t cure cellulite,” says Selezneva, “but its appearance can fluctuate depending on lifestyle factors and skin quality.”
Factors such as diet, exercise, hydration, and circulation all play a role in how cellulite appears on the skin.
Lifestyle habits that can help reduce cellulite appearance
Maintaining overall skin quality can make cellulite dimples appear less noticeable. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and movement are all important.
Gentle daily activity, such as walking, supports circulation and blood flow, both of which contribute to healthy-looking skin. Staying active and hydrated helps keep your skin looking its best and can enhance overall skin tone and texture.
At-home wellness approaches to cellulite reduction
If you want to go a step further, some simple at-home practices can help support the appearance of smoother skin.
Dry Brushing
Dry brushing your skin can stimulate the surface and encourage temporary improvements in texture. It’s quick, easy, and a little bit satisfying to feel the immediate “smooth” effect.
Infrared Therapy
Using an LED light therapy panel with near and deep near-infrared wavelengths is another popular approach. Many people notice that regular sessions can support the appearance of firmer, smoother skin, making cellulite on thighs, bum, legs, and stomach appear less noticeable.
Infrared Sauna Blankets
Other devices like infrared sauna blankets are great for at-home relaxation and wellness. The heat helps the skin feel more relaxed and supple, which can temporarily smooth the appearance of your skin. When used alongside good hydration, regular movement, and a balanced diet, they can support the look of healthier-looking, more even skin as part of a broader wellness approach.
There’s no guaranteed way to completely get rid of cellulite, but incorporating these wellness approaches can form a routine that your skin will thank you for.
How to support the appearance of cellulite
While you can’t permanently remove cellulite, lifestyle habits and simple at-home wellness approaches can help support the appearance of smoother, firmer skin.
At the end of the day, cellulite is just a normal part of life and something most of us share. Care for your skin, give yourself a bit of patience, and embrace your dimples. They're part of what makes you, you.
